A Study in I Corinthians
“Corinth was a city so famous for its licentious lifestyle that it spawned a verb to “Corinthianize” which meant to behave in a morally unbridled manner. Yet in this community, Paul planted a church made up of scattered Jews and formerly idolatrous Gentiles who desperately needed his guidance as to how they should live and think in their particular context.” The Quarterly Reformed Curriculum, I Corinthians.
The challenges Paul faced in discipling the Corinthian church were like the challenges we face in contemporary Christianity.
Paul’s relationship with this group of people was strained to the point of breaking, yet Paul’s approach to their spiritual immaturity avoided two extremes:
o He avoids writing them all off as unbelievers because of their immaturity and immorality.
o He avoids indulging their immaturity and immorality with acceptance by drawing clear lines of demarcation in dealing with chronic rebellion and sexual immorality.
For these reasons we believe I Corinthians is an important book to teach for such a time as this.
